The Amazing SpiderMan (Movie Edition)...

The Amazing Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)

I actually had no interest in the 1st wave figures under the 6" Amazing Spiderman Movie Figure line. That wave had the normal/masked Movie Spidey, the Miles Morales Spidey and the Movie Lizard figures. But when I saw this figure late last year from wave 2 (basically the same lineup of figures PLUS this unmasked variant of Andrew Garfield's Spidey) I knew I had to get it. That headsculpt is mighty impressive for a mass market action figure....doncha' agree? To cap it all off, many reviews mentioned that the Marvel Select version had a worse headsculpt compared to this one. So, with that in mind and seeing how I'm such a sucka for 'unmasked' action figures, I snagged him off the shelf in an instant!

The packaging is the standard blister card packaging with the huge movie Spidey image on the top left corner. One can clearly see what you're gettin' with this figure. When I first saw the accessories i.e. a backpack and a skateboard, I said to myself that that's probably worth my money more than some silly-lookin' web thingy (from the normal version of this figure)....and you'd get that 'HeroClix'-style base too. Nice one Hasbro! Unfortunately this was the only one left on the pegs for the day (the pegs were re-stocked with another 3 the next day.....D'OH!)...so it meant that I had to be content with this one. Notice how the right arm is a bit warped....darn.

At the back of card you'd get to read his bio...pretty standard stuff here. I love it that the skateboard can be attached to his backpack (more on that later) and that we get to alternate between the heads. Hey, remember THAT version of Tobey McGuire's Toybiz Spidey figure where you actually get a real 'latex'-like rubber mask for your 6" figure? That was super-realistic but the mask was easily torn. Great concept but the accessory didn't last long. These inter-changeable heads however will surely last much longer!

Here's the figure fresh out of the box.

Here's Spidey with both of the heads for your comparison purposes. I gotta say that's a fine representation of the actor there complete with his crazy 'higher than usual' hairstyle and all. But the 'masked' head makes his eyes look a bit further up his face than where his eyes were on his unmasked headsculpt, doncha' think? And just where did ALL of that hair go inside that mask?! LOL.

I love the feel of the suit. Some people might make a whole lotta fuss about the sculpted texture on the suit vs the 'raised' texture etc.....but I didn't mind about those at all. The suit looks great and that's that.

The Amazing Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)

Articulation wise, he's got about 32 PoA, which is very good by any action figure standard! That reminds me of the Toybiz Marvel Legends era! Articulate away!

The Amazing Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)

Sure, this ain't your regular 'comic-friendly' Spidey suit from the days of yore. Even I didn't give much chance to it when I first saw this 'revamped' suit design through some preview pictures all those months ago. But I guess we're lucky that the suit is still red/blue in colour....right? It looks o-k...but given the choice I'd say I'll choose the 'classic' suit any time over this one.

Ah, this is what everybody's been waiting for ain't it? A closer look on the unmasked head!

The Amazing Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)

I think the likeness is definitely there. Try looking at him from the front and from the sides, it's definitely Andrew Garfield there. I too feel that this version is much more superior than the Marvel Select version. At least this one looks more like the actor.

I like it how the eyes on the mask stays true to its on-screen appearance...yellow eyes and all. If I remember correctly, Pete used his yellow Oakley shades for his goggles right?

And here's the backpack. It fits just about right on his shoulders. Not much of a problem to get it onto his back. Notice that black rubber band at the back? That's for the skateboard. Clever stuff from Hasbro!

Skateboard attached....Ta-da!

Actually, come to think of it. this figure would've worked too if he's in his student attire. So there's a possibility of some custom  'student Peter Parker complete with glasses' figure to be made here.

THE REBEL'S VERDICT: This one fits nicely with the rest of your movie Marvel characters. Make you wonder why wasn't he around when the Avengers were fighting Loki and warding off the Chitauri invasion eh? If you're crazy enough, he can even be your 'default' Spiderman amongst your comic-book Marvel action figures too. The fact that he's a bit harder to find in retail pegs (he's out there alright but it may stretch your patience a little bit just to find out which retail stores carry Wave 2 of the line) makes it even more worth it. Overall, a very solid figure that deserves to stand amongst your collection!
